André Baniwa

Consultant, Secretariat of Indigenous Health, Ministry of Health of Brazil

Currently serves as Technical Advisor on Indigenous Medicines at the Secretariat of Indigenous Health within the Ministry of Health of Brazil. He worked at the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples from 2023 to 2024. A social entrepreneur, Brazilian Indigenous activist, and leader of the Baniwa people since 1992, he holds a degree in Environmental Management Technology (2022) and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Professional Sustainability with Traditional Peoples and Territories at the University of Brasília (UnB) (2024–2025).

He served as President of OIBI (Indigenous Organization of the Içana Basin) in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2013, and 2017; Vice President of FOIRN (Federation of Indigenous Organizations of the Rio Negro) from 2006 to 2008; and Vice Mayor of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Amazonas, from 2009 to 2012. He was also an Ashoka Foundation Fellow from 2001 to 2003.

He is the author of the books 25 Years of OIBI Associative Management for the Well Living of the Baniwa and Koripako Peoples (São Gabriel da Cachoeira: OIBI, 2018) and Well Living and Living Well According to the Baniwa People in the Northwestern Brazilian Amazon (UFPR Press, 2019).
