Dr. Carlos Nobre

Co-Chair
Science Panel for the Amazon

Prof. Nobre is a Brazilian Earth System scientist who dedicated over four decades of his professional life to studying the Amazon. Currently, he is the Co-Chair of the Science Panel for the Amazon. Global climate change and land use change are bringing the Amazon rainforest very close to a tipping point of becoming open canopy degraded ecosystems. Prof. Nobre wants to stimulate dialogues about ways to find a sustainable future for the Amazon. Saving the Amazon is a big challenge, but regionally and globally we have to find ways to zero down deforestation, forest degradation, and wildfires. There is a tremendous potential for a new bioeconomy of healthy standing forests that is science-based and based on Indigenous Peoples' and local communities' knowledge.
